What We Learned This Week

Succession Season 5 (IRL): Merger talks are reportedly underway in the media industry, with preliminary discussions between Warner Bros Discovery and Paramount Global. The merger involves significant content brands controlled by each, such as HBO, Max, TNT, TBS (Warner Bros) and Nickelodeon, MTV, Showtime (Paramount). Both entities also oversee major broadcast networks – Fox for Warner Bros and CBS for Paramount. Mergers of this nature often trigger scrutiny, questioning the impact on brand identity and loyal fanbases. Speculation goes further, suggesting Warner Bros' talks may aim to influence Comcast to spin off its NBC Universal assets. The media landscape in 2024 appears poised for notable changes in this politically charged environment.

Apple Watch May Be Tough to Come By: Apple is temporarily suspending sales of specific Apple Watch models (Series 9 and Ultra) in the US due to a patent dispute related to blood oxygen sensors. The US International Trade Commission issued an import ban, alleging patent infringement by Apple against medical device maker Masimo. The sales pause, starting on December 26th, is noteworthy as Apple couldn't find a workaround before this point, highlighting the complexity of the issue. Although not anticipated to have a substantial impact on financial results presently, the situation raises curiosity about the measures required to address and resolve the problem.

Call Us Fans: Costco stands out for its remarkable consistency and exceptional execution, showcasing resilience amidst a challenging retail landscape. While other major retailers grapple with various issues, Costco remains relatively unaffected, evident in their recent quarterly beat and the announcement of a special dividend. Their commitment to employees, customers, and disciplined store growth is commendable. The company's integrity and leadership shine, positioning them well for future success. We anticipate positive developments under the new CEO, Ron Vachris, as Craig Jelinek steps down after over a decade at the helm.
